Affirming Gender Nonconforming and Transgender Youth in the Justice System

Research shows that 20% of youth in the justice system are lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning, gender nonconforming or transgender. The expansion of LGBQ/GNCT girls, who represent 40-50% of all youth assigned female at birth in the justice system, means that service providers should seriously consider how to make their programs more affirming of youth across the gender spectrum. On May 15th, Reclaiming Futures hosted a webinar with Dr. Angela Irvine and Ms. Aisha Canfield from Ceres Policy research, and Kiku Johnson from Once Circle Foundation, where they presented updated research on LGBQ/GNCT youth in the justice system, offered suggestions for how to develop more authentic relationships with young people, and presented information on how to make services more affirming for gender nonconforming and transgender youth in the justice system.
