Reclaiming Futures Seattle-King County was one of the original 10 projects funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to help teens in trouble with drugs, alcohol and crime. We have partnered with the courts, treatment facilities, juvenile justice centers, and community to meet the urgent needs of these young people in our juvenile justice system.
Teens in King County need help. Of the teens ages 11 to 18 in the juvenile justice system, 28 percent have been in trouble in school, nearly 70 percent are at risk for HIV exposure and 53 percent indicate daily use of substances. .
At Reclaiming Futures Seattle-King County we have improved the way we help these teens by improving treatment services and by making institutional changes that included the following:
- Provided comprehensive screening and assessments to all young people in our publicly funded system using electronic GAIN tools
- Provided adolescent specific evidence based treatment models
- Provided additional supports to juvenile justice youth who also have mental health issues;
- Provided a Mentor Program
- Provided High Fidelity Wraparound model to nurture and support these youth on probation and beyond
- Celebrated successes to honor young people making progress and when reclaimed by their community
- Sustained a project director position called the Science to Service coordinator
- Integrated the Reclaiming Futures model into our county policies and procedures, and workforce training plan for youth counselors
- Use the model as a paradigm for the county RFP's and Strategic Plan
- Awarded the 2007 SAMHSA Science to Service Award for Treatment
