About Us  |  Our Team  |  News  |  Media

Reclaiming Futures in the Cumberlands is one of 26 Reclaiming Futures projects utilizing a new approach to help teens involved with drugs, alcohol, and crime. Cumberland River Comprehensive Care Center is using the Reclaiming Futures model to initiate change and improve substance abuse treatment for youth in its justice system. Working through Cumberland River Mental Health/Mental Retardation Inc. and based in Whitley County, KY it was selected for RWJF support 2008-2010.

Some youth in Whitley County are in trouble. The scope of the drug problem in rural Kentucky encompasses alcohol, marijuana, ecstasy, mushrooms, inhalants, cocaine, oxycontin, and illegal use of prescription drugs, methamphetamine and LSD. According to a statewide household survey, an estimated 40 percent of youth ages 12-17 in Kentucky use alcohol and illicit drugs.

At Reclaiming Futures, we are working to improve the quality of alcohol and drug treatment services available to youth in our justice system. We plan to do the following to help young people in our area:

  • Improve treatment services for drug and alcohol use
  • Create a comprehensive system of care that coordinates social services, and
  • Involve the community in creating new opportunities for youth.
