Reclaiming Futures Nassau County, NY
Reclaiming Futures Nassau County based in the Nassau County Family Court, part of The New York State Unified Court System, is one of 26 Reclaiming Futures projects utilizing a new approach to help teens involved with drugs, alcohol, and crime. We are partnering with treatment providers, juvenile justice, community members and families to meet the urgent needs of these young people in our juvenile justice system. We are funded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, which is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. We receive additional support from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In 2006, there were 855 juveniles brought into the system here, with an average age of 15. In total, there were 2,060 charges filed against these youth, of which more than 43 percent were felony charges. The Nassau County Department of Probation has found approximately 40 percent of these 855 teens had a substance abuse issue. The New York State Unified Court System will help these youth by applying the Reclaiming Futures model to the Nassau County Juvenile Treatment Court (NCJTC) program to improve the way the family court coordinates with public and nonprofit agencies. The goal is to improve how we identify, screen and assess these youth for drug and alcohol problems, and better engage them in effective treatment. It is anticipated that the Reclaiming Futures model will help hundreds of troubled youth in Nassau County break the cycle of drugs, alcohol, and crime.
