Reclaiming Futures Bristol County

Reclaiming Futures Bristol County is one of 26 Reclaiming Futures projects using a new approach to help teens involved with drugs, alcohol, and crime. Based out of the 2nd Chance Juvenile Drug Court program, the project uses the Reclaiming Futures model to help teens in trouble. The City of New Bedford, Bristol County Sheriff’s Office, and Bristol County District Attorney Office are working with the community, treatment providers and social service agencies to help its juvenile district court provide better intervention and treatment to young people in need.

Some youth in New Bedford are in trouble. The City of New Bedford, and surrounding towns, has a disproportionately high number of young people whose lives have begun a downward spiral of substance abuse and delinquent activity. The majority of young people in Juvenile Court, especially low-income youth and youth of color, face an uphill struggle to attain a healthy, self-sustaining future. The economic challenges, educational deficits, and lack of family support and social opportunities have long hindered young offenders in Bristol County.

At Reclaiming Futures, we are working to improve the quality of alcohol and drug treatment services available to youth in our justice system, and help teens thrive through future community support. We plan to do the following to help young people in our area:

  • Improve treatment services for drug and alcohol use,
  • Create a comprehensive system of care that coordinates social services, and
  • Involve the community in creating new opportunities for youth.
