Anchorage, AK - Reclaiming Futures Anchorage
About Us | Our Team | News | Media
Reclaiming Futures Anchorage was one of 10 founding projects funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to take a new approach to help teens in trouble with drugs, alcohol and crime. We partnered with the courts, treatment facilities, detention facilities, school district, and community to bring about these changes.
In 2009, there were 1,355 young people referred to the Anchorage Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), which is 40 percent of the youth referred in the entire state during the same period. The DJJ oversees eight state facilities that provide substance abuse treatment, education and prevention to young people. In addition, there are 16 statewide probation offices that serve youth referred for community-based services. Alaska typically maintains a diversion rate of around 75 percent.
At Reclaiming Futures Anchorage, we improved the quality of alcohol and drug treatment services available to youth in our justice system in the following ways:
- Focused on young people ages 12-18 who represented the ethnic diversity of the local juvenile justice population
- Initiated screening
- Increased and improved treatment and services
- Improved planning and communication between internal agencies
Collaborated with the community and agencies to help improve outcomes for youth through mentoring, pro-social opportunities, incentives for engagement and treatment success and more
- Participated in community-wide plan to address reducing youth violence through effective services for youth. Now includes many features of Reclaiming Futures, such as: screening, evidence-based treatment practices and more
