Family is a perceptive response to working with youth and yet, all too frequently the resources and strengths of families go untapped when a juvenile teen is concerned with the justice system. Normally youth and their families are engaged in more than one system at the same time—the juvenile and/or criminal justice system, the child welfare system or a combination of the three. Navigating these systems can be demanding, and ensuring that local networks and social supports are tapped is a significant step in success.
